Those who signed the American Declaration of Independence were considered traitors and risked capital punishment. They were indeed brave.

But what about artists and authors today — or persons who post demeaning things online against leaders, prophets or God? Artists/cartoonists, authors/playwrights etc. often display great courage in their art and writing. The long arm of legal liability is no longer merely local or national, and limits on freedom of speech and expression are increasingly diffuse in a globalized and multicultural world. It is in the interests of all that artists, authors and thinkers have freedom of expression. We are soon facing intrusions on freedom of thought.
