The future of Art?

“Toxique / Toxic”, 40×40 cm., oil on canvas, is an abstract painting which uses colourfield and geometric styles to induce feelings of the “disgusting” which is beautiful. Here “the disgusting” is created by color combinations and the dizziness of the geometric images seemingly twirling about in atmospheric bile. The painting gives a sense of elegance in its overall balance and technical precision, while at the same time requiring quiet acceptance of discomfort.

The future of Art?!! Ha! I understand that artists and art critics are asking this question, but it is a question that has been posed for centuries. Also asked are: “Hasn’t every possible major style been exhausted? Are there any new ideas or interpretations left to depict? Isn’t painting ‘dead’?”

Art changes constantly and is highly unpredictable. The many warnings that occur sporadically over time that “painting is dead” are all bullshit. They remind me of the Year 2000 “Y2K” problem, which never happened. Paintings have existed, developed and evolved since caveman civilizations. While the tradition of painting on canvases may not last another 100 years, painting will certainly exist in other forms and mediums. Perhaps the more interesting questions are: “What is the future of art galleries and fine art museums? Will internet galleries and museums eventually replace the few remaining physical places to see and buy art? And will the present “open field” for all to become famous and best-selling authors and artists through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook fame etc. (which is, in actuality, a rebellion against elitism in publishing, writing and fine art) continue for much longer? Or will the buying public once again return to elitism in order to raise status and profit for the few? Is it human nature to become elitist with internet-driven money and fame?”. My art and writing are meant to be different and new; and pleasing, challenging and annoying — at the same time. I have resided several places in the USA, as well as in Spain and (currently) in Norway. My art often addresses cultural, political, social and spiritual issues relevant to our day and age.

Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degree from USA. Have previously worked as classical pianist in New York City, but now express myself artistically as a writer and visual artist. Have had exhibitions in Norway and Sweden, and appeared as featured poet in New York, Oslo, Buenos Aires, Kathmandu etc. I have had one-man and group exhibitions at art galleries and public institutions in Norway and Sweden. My art serves as book cover art and internet art, as well as fine art.

I have had several one-man shows and group exhibitions in Norway and in Sweden, and my art can be found in both private collections and those of major institutions and embassies/consulates.
