I usually do not ask myself ยซwhat if I had done this or thatยป as much as ยซwhat if I had not done that?ยป, but I did turn down one challenge that could have altered my life considerably. While young and relatively new to NYC I was approached with what was โ at the time โ an outrageous proposition: to train with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo for an upcoming European tour โ dancing ballet, in full drag. I politely turned it down, lacking both sexual maturity and identity. But I often wonder what that experience could have led to. Soon afterwards I jumped on every crazy challenge that came my way, including eventually changing country and nationality. The infectious new NYC avantgarde artistic niches in the โ70s and โ80s did that, and the transition from gay and bi ex-hippies to queer was natural for many of us.
